Fields of The Nephilim - The Nephilim

Fields of The Nephilim are a goth band that started in the 80's and still plays today. They have this ridiculous western theme and are pretty damn awesome...well, before they started to add too much of a metal influence in their music. The Nephilim was the follow-up album to their debut Dawnrazor, which I previously had up on this blog (it's my personal favorite of theirs). If you don't download this album at least watch the video...they're out there.

Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance

Dead Can Dance was a two-piece (although they eventually went on to play with orchestras and such) on 4AD records that started off as a goth/post-punk band and eventually came to incorporate a huge influence from world music. Here is their debut album, which I feel is probably the most accessible. Dead Can Dance is a hard band describe as their sound is definitely something else, but 100% worth checking out. Ride, Bauhaus and Year Future all do pretty decent covers of this band as well.

Christian Death - Ashes

Christian Death were one of the prominent bands in the 80's LA Deathrock/Goth scene. Most people seem to have "Only Theatre of Pain" but thats it. Let me tell you, Christian Death still has more to offer (as long as it's an album with Rozz on vocals). Ashes is a great album to go to after checking out "Only Theatre of Pain". comment if you need me to upload that album as well.

My Bloody Valentine - This Is Your Bloody Valentine

This is the debut release from My Bloody Valentine and it sounds NOTHING like the shoegaze band they eventually came to be. This sounds like some crazy combination of The Birthday Party and The Cramps. Don't expect to hear anything close to Loveless...you'll be highly disappointed, still an awesome album though if you know what you're getting yourself into.

The Pop Group - Y

Don't let the name The Pop Group decieve you...this is actually one of the most chaotic bands I have ever heard, especially for this 1979 debut album. If you want to know where The Birthday Party took a huge influence from, it was these guys. Technically considered a "post-punk" band, the Pop Group was actually a mix of punk, jazz, dub and funk with a hell of a lot of noise thrown in.

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing

Placebo is a three-piece alt rock band from the UK. You probably had a bunch of lame weirdos at your high school that dug the shit out of this band preventing you from checking them out...I know I did. As soon as I listened to the song "You Don't Care About Us", I felt like a fucking moron. the vocals take a bit to get used to but its worth. Imagine a cheesier, poppier Smashing Pumpkins with some weirdo shit and you've got Placebo.

Sisters of Mercy - Live Rarities/Songs for New Album

This is a compilation of live songs that are apparently going to be used for a new Sisters of Mercy album....pretty good stuff.

Crime & The City Solution - Room Of Lights

Crime and The City Solution was the 2nd major post-The Birthday Party band featuring Rowland S. Howard and Mick Harvey. If you're into The Birthday Party and/or early Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds then check this out.

download

Rowland S. Howard - Teenage Snuff Film

Rowland S. Howard is the former guitarist of many well known Australian post-punk bands such as The Birthday Party, Crime & The City Solution and These Immortal Souls. He is personally one of my favorite guitarists, I highly recommend getting this album. Looking forward to the new album that he is supposedly recording. He recently released a split with Devestations and collaborated with them on a cover of the Velvet Underground song "Ocean".

The Cult - Love

This is when southern death cult/death cult finally ended up turning into a rock band. Its no Ghost Dance but its not bad at all. You might recognize the song in the video, "She Sells Sanctuary".

Xmal Deutschland - Fetisch

Xmal Deutschland was an 80's goth band from Germany on 4ad records. They used to be an all-girl group which is pretty cool....definetly check them out if you're into early Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie and The Banshees. Fetisch was their debut full length. try not to get turned off by the fact that they sing in german.

Sad Lovers & Giants - Epic Garden Music

DOWNLOAD THIS IMMEDIATLY. Sad Lovers and Giants were a post-punk band from England that formed in 1981. I don't know what else to say about this band other than they are criminally underrated and if you don't dig this album then I don't know what you're doing on this blog. For fans of The Chameleons, The Comsat Angels and The Church.

Doppelganger - Saturnian Rings

I'm going to completely honest when I say that I really don't know much about Doppelganger except for the fact that they are a Russian three piece goth band and have apparently been around for a long time.

download

Scarlet's Remains - The Palest Grey

Scarlet's Remains was an LA Deathrock band that formed in 2003 which featured members from bands such as Christian Death, Voodoo Church and Mephisto Walz. Vocalist Eveghost reminds me of Dinah Cancer of 45 Grave in many ways and its awesome. Unfortunatly, this band broke up last year, The Palest Grey was their final album.

Kommunity FK - The Vision and The Voice

This is the debut album from Kommunity FK who have grown to be one of my favorite death rock bands. Description and video are below in a previous post.

Death Cult - Ghost Dance

Death Cult was Ian Astbury's band post-Southern Death Cult and pre-The Cult. Death Cult formed when Astbury left SDC to join up with Theatre of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy. This album definetly shows the progression from goth band to rock band.

download

Kommunity FK - Close One Sad Eye

Kommunity FK (fuck) was one of the founding bands of the LA Deathrock scene. Definetly check out if you're a fan of 45 grave, Christian Death or the whole Bat Cave scene. Apparently core member Patrick Mata has been working on the third album for the past 20 years or so, still waiting on that one though.

Soul Merchants - Gate of Heaven

80's band from Denver, Colarado that combines aspects of Goth and 60's rock. They have been oftened described as a mix between The Doors and The Sisters of Mercy.

download

Ausgang - Manipulate

One of the essential "Batcave" Goth bands. If you're into other Batcave bands such as Alien Sex Fiend and Specimen, then you know what you are getting yourself into.

download

Creeps On Candy - Wonders of Giardia

Essentially the same band as Dead and Gone (they flip-flopped back and forth a couple times). Creeps On Candy were an east bay hardcore band featuring members from Talk Is Poison and Year Future. Their songs are very bass/drum driven with noisey guitars, taking a lot of cues from bands such as The Birthday Party and Jesus Lizard.

Zero Le Creche - Falling EP & Last Year's Wife 12"

Zero Le Creche was mostly known for their 80's Goth Hit "Last Year's Wife". This is all the material they released with original singer, Andy Nkanza. For Fans of Psychedelic Furs.

download

Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting

This is "the" album to check out by the 80's/90's alt band, Concrete Blonde. While this is definetly a "rock" album, it has a definite dark/gothic feel to it. Female Vocals. good stuff.

download

Abecedarians - The Other Side Of The Fence

LA based 80's band that sounds a lot like if New Order was heavily synth-driven. Abecedarians were actually signed to Factory Records at one point. "The Other Side of the Fence" is a compilation of early demo tracks and such.

The Birthday Party - Drunk On The Pope's Blood

The Birthday Party is easily one of my favorite bands, this is Nick Cave's band before the Bad Seeds. It's hard to classify such a ridiculous band but there are somewhere between goth and no-wave. "Drunk on The Pope's Blood" is a live album that is a pretty good introduction to the band(it includes a cover of the stooge's song Loose). Chances are that you listen to a band that cites The Birthday Party as an influence so you should do yourself a favor and check it out...if you don't like this (or at least appreciate it), then you are probably a jerkoff.

download

Adam & The Ants - Kings Of The Wild Frontier

Yes, you are seeing a fucking New Romantic album on here. For those of you who are unaware, New Romantic is some awful combination of glam, new-wave and punk. While that seems super terrible and something that you wouldn't like to hear (which it is normally), Adam and the Ants manage to pull it off on their album "Kings of The Wild Frontier", I highly encourage giving this album a chance...if you end up not liking it, feel free to make fun of me for it. You may or may not recognize the song in the video from the movie SLC Punk.

download

Bauhaus - Mask

While this isn't "In The Flat Field", it's still Bauhaus which means it's still awesome. Essential Goth that's a little dancier/poppier than most typical goth albums though.

Bell Hollow - Foxgloves

some more poppier sounding post-punk. For fans of The Smiths, Echo and The Bunnymen and Psychedelic Furs.

download

The Comsat Angels - Waiting For A Miracle

Imagine a poppier version of Joy Division with some keyboards thrown in for good measure.

download

X - Under The Big Black Sun

I'm fairly certain that X needs no introduction as most are familiar with the album "Los Angeles" (or have at least heard the title track). I prefer this album though, some good 80's rock.

Starflyer 59 - Old

sweet "shoegazey indie rock", don't let the fact that they are on tooth and nail records turn you off.

The Sisters Of Mercy - Vision Thing

Easily the most disliked Sisters Of Mercy album, but it still manages to be wonderful.GOTH ESSENTIAL.
